ABOUT US

Rathmor Stud was established in 1998 when Mike and Tanya McHardy purchased the farm from Dr. Allan King. The business operated as Macrath Stud.

Mike and Tanya bred multiple Group One winners from 1998 to 2014, the likes of Malteme, Wendywood both Grade 1 winners and Gypsy’s Warning a dual Grade 1 winner in SA and a Grade 1 winner in USA.

In 2014, Mario Ferreira approached Mike and Tanya to officially register Rathmor Stud (Pty) Ltd as a partnership to start their breeding operation. The first decision was to purchase Noble Tune (USA), the first son of Unbridled Song to stand in South Africa.

During Noble Tune’s stud career, he produced the likes of Copper Mountain (Gr1 Placed) and Paths of Victory (Winner of Grade 3 – 2020 Gold Cup at Greyville). He currently has the very promising 3yr old gelding named Noble City, who has won 2 of his 3 starts and looks like a promising prospect for the 2023 KZN Champions Season)

Noble Tune sadly passed in November 2021.

In September 2021, Mario imported Declarationofpeace (Noble Tune’s half brother by War Front) from Coolmore in Ireland. He is the 3rd son of War Front to stand at Stud in SA, alongside Fire Away and Lancaster Bomber who has since sadly passed.

IN 2019, Mike and Tanya decided to go on their own as Macrath Stud, however, they still play a huge role in Rathmor Stud, as they currently stand Rathmor’s Stallion Declarationofpeace (USA) (the third son of War Front to stand at Stud in South Africa) and all Rathmor Broodmares go to Macrath Stud every season to foal down and to be covered again.

From Macrath the mares then return to Wetlands Game Lodge / Rathmor Stud, where they raise their foals until weaned and then back to Macrath, and or to the Western Cape to foal down and to be covered again. In 2023 it was decided that Mario’s farm in Summerveld would start preparing the Yearlings for the various Sales, under the supervision of Mike and Tanya. The first of these yearlings will be sold at the 2023 KZN Bloodstock Sale.

Over the years since 2014, Rathmor Stud has increased their Broodmare Band from 14 Mares to its current band of 82 Mares. During this period, Rathmor has produced the winner of the 2020 Group 1 Fillies Guineas in Cape Town , named Missippi Burning who was sold to Australia and has since produced a Kingman and Frankel foal. Rathmor also produced the winner of the 2020 Group 3 – Gold Cup at Greyville, named Paths of Victory.

The vision going forward is to become one of the leading Stud Farms in KZN and South Africa and to continue breeding quality Racehorses, who hopefully can become some of the elite Group winners in SA and hopefully on the international stage as well. The three farms, namely Wetlands Game Lodge/Rathmor Stud, Macrath Stud and Summerveld will all play a major role in Rathmor Stud’s vision to achieve the goal.
